Zoning Disputes and Appeals: What to do when you use a property illegally

Zoning disputes can arise when there are disagreements over property usage, development proposals, or the interpretation of zoning regulations. These disputes can be frustrating, but it’s important to approach them constructively to find a resolution.

When receiving a Contravention Notice, we advise that you follow the following steps:

  1. Communication: Start by communicating with the parties involved, such as your neighbors, developers, or municipal officials. Open and honest dialogue can often lead to a mutually agreeable solution.
  2. Town Planner: Discuss the proposal with a professional Town Planner to ensure you understand the requirements and determine what the process will be to correct the zoning.
  3. Application: If direct communication doesn’t resolve the issue, consider speaking to your Town Planner to determine the application process to correct the matter.

Remember, it’s crucial to document all communications, gather evidence, and understand your rights and responsibilities throughout the process.
